Water Birth Options In Baton Rouge

Birth Center of Baton Rouge

The Birth Center of Baton Rouge was established out of a growing desire to provide a low-intervention birth experience for low-risk clients. With experienced midwives and nurses on staff, mothers can feel confident they are in safe and supportive hands.

For many families, the Birth Center is also one of the most well-known options for a water birth in Baton Rouge. The center offers a home-like environment that supports natural labor and delivery while providing access to trained medical professionals every step of the way.

Located just outside Woman’s Hospital, the Birth Center provides quick access to hospital care if a medical emergency arises. This combination of personalized midwifery care and proximity to a hospital makes it an appealing option for families seeking a natural birth experience with additional peace of mind.

What to Expect at the Birth Center

Though I did not give birth at the Birth Center, I toured the facility while pregnant with my daughter. The amenities are unlike anything else. The facility feels clean and thoughtfully designed. The staff greeted me warmly and made me feel comfortable from the moment I arrived. I met several midwives and quickly saw the level of support they provide families. The birthing rooms are spacious and include a full-size bed, standing shower, and birthing tub for families considering a water birth. A kitchen down the hall adds to the comfortable, home-like atmosphere. If I had chosen the Birth Center, I would have felt safe, supported, and right at home.

Prenatal Care, Water Birth, & Postpartum Care

Prenatal appointments also take place at the Birth Center. They offer on-site ultrasounds and a fully equipped space for lab work. Postnatal care continues there as well, with appointments available up to six weeks postpartum. This allows mothers to receive consistent, continuous care throughout pregnancy, birth, and recovery.

One of the most common questions about birthing at a birth center is, “Is it safe?” Yes—birth center care is very safe for low-risk pregnancies. Certified midwives and nurses are available to guide you through every stage of pregnancy and birth. In the event of a complication, the team coordinates with an on-call physician and will transfer care to one of two nearby hospitals if needed.

One feature I was especially interested in was the option for a water birth in Baton Rouge at the Birth Center. Many families use water as a natural way to ease labor pain and support relaxation during delivery. Some of the benefits include:

  • Shortening labor time
  • Increasing energy levels
  • Allowing freedom of movement
  • Creating a greater sense of privacy
  • Reducing perineal tearing and the need for stitches
  • Easing stress for the baby by creating a gentler transition from the womb

During my tour, the staff also shared that families are welcome to bring music, snacks, and other personal comforts to help create a calming and empowering water birth experience.

Birthing Classes

The Birth Center also hosts prenatal and birthing classes to help you better prepare for a natural birth experience (water birth or not) that I highly recommend. I learned so much and it helped to better equip me for my own labor and delivery. The more you know, the more informed decisions you can make that is best for you and your family.

Ochsner Medical Center – Baton Rouge

The Ochsner labor and delivery section of the hospital offers a midwifery model to prenatal, birth and postnatal care. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I chose to give birth here as they also have birthing tubs available for those looking for a water birth experience. I will say that the labor and delivery team were angels sent from heaven for me when I gave birth.

When my labor stalled, I chose to get the epidural as I had already been laboring for several days. I didn’t want to be too tired to push. We had initially thought baby was ready to come, so I did get the chance to step in the tub before I got the epidural. The tub water felt amazing and definitely helped ease some of the contractions.

Though I didn’t get the water birth experience I had hoped for, I was in the right place when a complication arose. I didn’t need an emergency transfer to a hospital because I was already there and able to receive the care I needed right away. I don’t regret any of the decisions I made leading up to giving birth. Each choice felt informed and supported with the help of a doula I hired.

What to Expect at Ochsner in Baton Rouge

Like to said initially, the labor and delivery team is nothing short of amazing at Ochsner! I loved the midwives there too. What is different about midwifery care is that you may not see the same midwife every time you have a prenatal appointment. But every midwife I met took the time to answer all my questions. None of my appointments felt rushed! I felt very heard and taken care of at Ochsner and I highly recommend any of the midwives there. The lactation consultants were awesome too! They also offer prenatal classes and childbirth education.

The only thing I didn’t love about Ochsner was the Mother-Baby Unit. The rooms were very (very) small. And though I felt cared for, I got the sense that some nurses didn’t want to be there. I had some great nurses too though! But others seemed like I was a burden. And it could be that I was just very needy. I had a very complicated delivery and lost a lot of blood. I felt in a daze. The shock of becoming a new mom was overwhelming, along with significant pain and sleep deprivation. Those factors may have influenced my experience as well.

I was overall pleased with my time at Ochsner and would recommend having a water birth there if you can tolerate a small Mother-Baby Unit after delivery.
