Making sessions fun for kids who hate looking at the camera

“Can we get mostly candids since our son doesn’t like to smile at the camera?”

Say no more. I loved this session because it reflects who kids really are. They just want to have fun and be seen! Sometimes bringing a toy to the session can make it more fun and engaging for them.

Instead of using the toy he brought though, he decided he wanted a pair binoculars from the gift shop. So we did just that. They bought the binoculars and we went looking for squirrels and critters around Rosedown.

And wouldn’t you know it? We ended up with some of the sweetest, most genuine smiles at the camera.

As parents, it’s so easy to want to control the session to get that perfect smiling photo. I get it! But the best thing you can do is keep smiling yourself and trust your photographer to keep the moment going.

Does it always go exactly as planned? Maybe not. But more often than not, you’ll walk away with images that feel real and ones you’ll love even more than what you imagined.

And you know something else? The time will come when they don’t want the binoculars anymore. 🥲
