Prepping Your Toddler for Family Photos (preventing meltdowns before they start)

Family

Feeling stressed about how the kids are going to act for a photography session? Prepping your toddler for the session can go a long way and save yourself some headache the day of your session.

  1. Talk about the session ahead of time

Toddlers do better when they know what to expect! A day before the session, tell them they are going to play outside while your friend (Mrs. Hope) takes pictures of them with mom, dad, brother or sister. Keep it simple and don’t pressure them smile the whole time, but to have fun in the moment. We keep our sessions fun and engaging for everyone.

2. Avoid itchy or problematic clothing

Avoid itchy fabric or clothes they can’t move in. Soft, neutral colors photograph beautifully and keep it focused on connection.

3. Be sure they go to bed on time and bring snacks.

A rested, well-fed toddler is a happier one! Morning sessions are great for kids since they tend to be in better moods then. I know my toddler has meltdowns the closer it approaches to bedtime. (We call it the 5:00 fall apart around here!) I know morning sessions will take some extra prep the night before, but it will be well worth it.

4. Bring a comfort item

A favorite stuffed animal or blanket can help shy toddlers warm up. These items even add to the family story. There will be a time when they no longer want the blanket or stuffed animal, so don’t worry about perfect esthetics, but remember that they will outgrow this stage and your heart will be happy you captured them with their favorite stuffy.

5. Embrace play

Walking, spinning, cuddling are all great things that keep toddlers engaged and creates genuine moments.

6. Keep expectations flexible

The goal isn’t perfect behavior. The goal is real connection. Even shy or wild moments become beautiful memories.

7. Let the photographer lead

A photographer experienced with children (Me! A retired elementary PE teacher here.) knows how to guide families, read toddler cues, and how to adapt quickly. I know we all want the smiles, but one day you’ll love back and love (or laugh) at the pouty face!
